ROMAN DE GARE
Claude Lelouch. 2007. 103 min. R. France. In French with subtitles.
"A lavishly appointed and sensuous thriller with a delightfully tricky plot." (New York Times)
In the still of the night, three lives are about to cross...a woman abandoned, a stranger awaiting his chance and a best-selling author who imagines the thriller of the year. Deceptively layered and intriguingly misleading, this highly anticipated new film from Oscar-winning director Claude Lelouch (A Man and a Woman) stars Dominique Pinon and Fanny Ardant as an unlikely pair caught up in a game with high stakes -- and deadly consequences.

THE VISITOR
Thomas McCarthy. 2008. 103 min. PG-13. US.
"Actor-turned-writer/filmmaker Tom McCarthy demonstrates that the critical acclaim for The Station Agent in 2003 was no fluke." (Hollywood Reporter)
Richard Jenkins (“Six Feet Under”) stars as a disillusioned Connecticut economics professor whose life is transformed by a chance encounter in New York City. A poignant and often funny film about rediscovering joy in the most unexpected places, The Visitor boasts an international cast including Haaz Sleiman (“24”), Obie Award winner Danai Gurira and Hiam Abbass (Munich).

SHOWTIMES/TICKETS
J'ENTENDS PLUS LA GUITARE (I Don't Hear the Guitar Anymore) Mon. June 2
Philippe Garrel. 1991. 98 min. NR. France, in French with subtitles. The Film Desk.
"A surpassingly delicate meditation on love, loss, and the passage of time." (Kent Jones, Film Society of Lincoln Center)
This little-seen gem from French counterculture icon Philippe Garrel is back. Poetic, and with a hypnotic romanticism, it "embodies Garrell's themes: the speed of life passing, the inescapable burden of memory" (New Yorker). The premise is a series of discussions in which a handsome, self-involved artist (based on Garrel himself ) talks about his notions of l'amour, his heroin addiction, and his tawdry, destructive relationship with a woman based on the Velvet Underground's Nico. New 35mm print.

THE EDGE OF HEAVEN Mon. June 30
Fatih Akin. 2007. 122 min. NR. Germany/Turkey, in German/Turkish/English with subtitles. Strand Releasing.
"An intriguing, complex, beautifully acted and directed piece of work...bold and exhilarating film-making." (The Guardian, London)
From Fatih Akin, whose Head-On was one of the best movies of 2004, this complex, deeply moving drama deals with tragedy, love, and the power of coincidence in the lives of several dislocated Germans and Turks. A university professor and his rascally old father, the father and a prostitute, the prostitute and her lesbian daughter, and the daughter and her lover—these are just some of the connections in the cross-cultural web that enmeshes the characters in each others' lives.
